It was more than a year a half ago since I’d taken this photograph. It was weeks after going to a workshop and still had that inertia of taking photographs. I went during my lunch hour to just explore. Sometimes I have an idea of what I’ll be photographing, but this day I didn’t. I had no idea what I was working on and was perhaps taking images at the worst possible time of the day. When it is high noon, there is nothing pretty. Sometimes the skies can look dreamy, but what the sun does to a subject is just awful. But hey, I didn’t have much of anything else to do.
So I was looking at this bridge I’ve taken many pictures from, mostly just before the sun went to sleep for the night. So I snapped a picture. I looked at it on the back of my camera. It looked like the dull image I was expecting. Then I thought that the bridge isn’t interesting at all, but the skies had that magical look. That day reminded me of the days I was in Osaka. I go back to those photographs from time to time. But as I was making the clouds punchy, I noticed that the bridge was getting darker. My “perfect exposure” meter in my mind went off and I was wondering what was I doing wrong. But at the same time I was liking the image more and more. So I kept going and going and going until everything looked like I had shot the image at sunset.
Again, this image did something to me. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with it. I don’t think I’ve ever showed this image to anybody, but it is going to be the base of my next big photo project of this year. I am giving myself two months to get it done. I think this is going to be one of the funnest projects I do at least so far this year.
What Exactly is the Damn Project?
What I will be doing is going around Houston and photographing images of bridges and highways silhouetted. That is it. Really simple. I don’t think this is going to be hard, but my main goal is for people who live in Houston be able to identify the bridges and highways by simply a piece of the bridge or highway in a shadow of itself.
I’ll keep y’all posted.
Big Crazy Wacky Challenge Starting Next Week
I’ll be revealing what this challenge is next week. I have already been working on it and want to start sharing it with everyone on here. It will be a case study that will go on for I think two months. And the best part is that I’ll be using myself as the Guinea pig.
